How This Blog Works

Each Wednesday, when the new grocery store ads (Albertsons, Sprouts, Kroger, etc) come out, I will publish a couple of lists: First a Produce-Only list. I can put it together quickly and this is where most of the biggest savings come from. A complete price matching list will follow. When those are finished, I will post an abbreviated list with just the very best deals of the week. When the same product is advertized at more that one store, I'll put the best price first. Then, I'll include the next-best price in parentheses, just in case you can't use the price from the first store.

Then on Sunday, when the national ads (Dollar General, Target, Walgreens, etc.) come out, I will publish a revised list to include these deals. Though, because Sunday is a day of rest and religious observance for me, and a day for family time, I will generally postpone these updates until early Monday morning. I know this may be inconvenient for some, but I do hope this blog will still be useful to you.

I won't include every item from every ad here, just the things that appear to be lower than the Walmart everyday price (WMEP). I will focus mainly on grocery items, but I will also do my best include household and personal items.

This is not intended to be a coupon blog, but I can refer you to some of my favorites so if you wish to check for corresponding coupons. For coupon matchups to local grocery stores (Albertsons, Kroger, and Tom Thumb) mydallasmommy.com and groceryshopforfreeatthemart.com are good place to check. There are some thorough coupon databases available--I have used them both and highly recommend them: fabulesslyfrugal.com (my favorite for newspaper coupons) and thekrazycouponlady.com (my favorite for printable coupons).

I am 100% open to suggestions and comments of the constructive kind. Your feedback on weekly deals and on this site are welcome!

Thanks for reading, and happy deal hunting!

  1. Thanks for doing this - I have been price matching at Walmart for years but this is m first time on your blog. Would it be possible for you to do the national ads on Wednesday instead of updating the next Monday? It would make it so they are included on Wednesday when the Sprouts ads overlap. Also, I think you are doing it already, but do you put in the price matches on Wednesday for both weeks of Sprouts ads (if not, would that be possible?) Maybe that is all too tricky since they run different days than most ads, but possibly color code for different ad durations? I don't know, just an idea. Thanks again.

    1. I have another question. Frequently in ads it will say "select variety" but after a quick scan through your blog posts I never see that. Do you just put in whatever variety is pictured, did I just miss it, or how do you handle these situations? I would love it if you put "select varieties" when the ad says it.
      Thanks

    2. Amanda,

Thank you for your feedback. I will be happy to include the overlap items from Sprouts, and I'll just mark them as "Wednesday only" or something.

I can see the convenience of having all of the items updated at the same time, but the national ad items expire on Saturday night, so if I only put them up on Wednesday, then the following Sun-Tues the national ad items would be out of date. Does that make sense? In fact, there have been so few deals from the national ad items that on some weeks, I haven't bothered to put them up. When I do put them up, I have put the national ad items in red, so I will get back in the habit of doing that :)

About the designation "select variety:" I have elected to leave that out because I didn't think that including it would add useful information. There are some ads that even include the phrase after each item as a matter of habit (like Kroger and Tom Thumb). So, I do try to note which ones are pictured, so that when using this blog you can be confident that at least those varieties are part of the selected ones. :)

Thank you for your suggestions. I welcome your input! Happy Price Matching!

  4. Hi is it true that Walmart changed their policy and will no longer price match store brands with their brands?

    1. Hi Rebaka,

I checked the corporate policy this morning, and I don't think the policy has changed recently. However, it could be an area that is left to the manager's discretion, and of course *that* can change without notice. :)

The corporate policy has this phrase in it: "We do not match...competitors' private label price promotions."

The definition of "private label" is where the ambiguity lies, in my opinion.

In my experience, most managers distinguish between a store brand as being ok (i.e. "Albertson's" brand or "Kroger" brand), and store's other proprietary brands as being private label no-no's (i.e. "Essential Everyday" from Albertsons, or "Private Selections" from Kroger). Though, it's possible that both could be thought of as "private label."

To play it safe, I only price match the brand named after the store to the Great Value brand, but even then, a manager could possibly disallow it.

If it's unclear how your Walmart regards this part of the policy, a quick call to your local customer service can clear it up.

Is there a specific Walmart you'd like to know about? If you let me know, I'll gladly call them and post what I find here.

    2. Thanks Carma I usually shop at the hickory creek Walmart I try and stay away from the loop 288 they are always disallowing things. I did call and they told me that they do match store brands I think some of the checkers like to jut give you a hard time. But I was told that at 288 that there was no more price matching store brands. But the hickory creek location I have rarely ever had a problem there.

  5. hi,
new here, just wondering how you "bring " your list to the store? It doesn't appear to be printable. Do I just copy what I would like to use and bring that? Would love to just print the list and highlight instead if possible. Thanks
    Karen

    1. Hi, Karen! Welcome! You're right. There's no easy way to print it right now, and I am sorry about that. We are working on a new website which will include that feature, and several others.

For now, to 'bring' the list to the store--I know many people pull up the list on their smart phone or tablet. If printing is preferred, you could copy and paste the whole thing to Word or Notepad then printing would get it done. If you click on the title of the post first (i.e. "Price Matching List, Sun 4/14 thru Tues 4/16") It will isolate just that post.

Alternatively, while on the blog post page, you could press CTRL + P to print from your browser, but that'll include all the side bars and such...

We hope to have the new site up and running in just a few weeks! If there's any price matching topics you'd like to talk about, I'd love to hear from you! You can post here, or send me an email at dfwpricematcher -at- gmail -dot- com.

      Thanks for joining us!

  6. thanks Carma, I'll try the copy and paste for now. That way I can print it and highlight what I will be getting. Amazing it came to 5 pages long. that's a lot of work you do. Appreciate you letting us enjoy your labors!
