Caution when price matching oranges

Good Deals, Good Checker
Yesterday, my little family was at Walmart in north Dallas (Denton, Loop 288). We had loaded our cart to overflowing, and nearly every item was price matched. Near the end of our checkout came the 14 oranges I had carefully picked (7/$.99 this week).

"I'm sorry, we can't price match the oranges." I looked up, confusion written on my face. He continued, looking apologetic, "The ones at the Mexican marts are the small snack-size oranges, so they aren't really the same."

What to do?
What should I do? I could tell he was feeling awkward for calling me out. Should I tell him it had always been ok in the past? Should I try to get a little huffy and see if he would just give it to me? Should I try to point out how the size was not really specified in this week's ad? I was not going to pay full price. (Full price? /gasp!!/)

"Oh...oh, that's ok then, I don't need them." He set them aside, breathed a little easier, and resumed checking. The truth is, last week, for the first time in Terry's ad, I actually did see the size specified as the "small snack-size" oranges. But, the small size was not specified this week, so I thought I would be ok.

He added, "Yeah, our managers really get onto us about that one--just 'cause it really is a smaller size..." It sounds like all of the checkers at this store were being instructed about the oranges.

Farewell cheap oranges?
So, buyers beware--at least at the Loop 288 store in Denton, you might not be able to get oranges as cheaply as we're used to. I think we'll be ok when the deal is for a bag of oranges, or the deal comes from a non-"Mexican mart."

What do you do?
When you're challenged on something at the register, how do you handle it? Some might be new to this whole price matching thing, some might feel intimidated, and some are confident old pros--share your wisdom, won't you?

  1. I normally do what you did. Just say politely, "Ok. I don't need them then."

  2. The Denton WalMart at Rayzor Ranch let me price match the oranges on Sat.

    1. That's great! Thanks for the info. I'll have to go down there on weeks when oranges are on sale.
